It’s a great experience having a dog in your home and around a toddler. The learning experience for your child is invaluable and a deep love for animals is often forged. It is important to choose your pet wisely though, as certain breeds can be unsuitable for young children.
We have put a list together of our favorite kid-friendly pooches to help you find the perfect companion for your young family.
Bull Dog
Bulldogs are docile, friendly and loving dogs that get on well with people and other dogs. They are suited for any home environment, whether a large house or small apartment, and because they are very sturdy dogs, they can definitely take a few knocks from playing children.
Bull Terrier
Bull Terriers do tend to get a bit of a bad press but they are friendly, energetic dogs that can take a lot of roughhousing from children. They are well suited for large families with several young children.
Collie
Collies are very gentle dogs and are easily trained. Collies make great dogs for families experiencing their first dog but they do require a lot of grooming due to their longer hair.
Beagle
Beagles are well suited to homes with active children as they have good energy levels and are sturdy. They are intelligent and get on with other pets too. Beagles do shed hair quite a bit, so it is important to consider the additional grooming and bathing that may be required.
Irish Setter
The Irish Setter is playful, energetic and loves being around people of all ages. A smart, trainable dog best suited to families with good yard space.
Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever is one of the United States’ favorite dogs. They are patient, reliable, loving and protective, the perfect family dog.
Mutts
Finally, a shout out to the beloved Mutt. Consider rescuing a mixed breed dog from a shelter. Midsize and larger dogs are great for families (small dogs are not). Find a great companion for your child as well as helping to rehome a pet.
