Can you recommend a good herbal supplement or vitamin for my 8 year old dog?
She still wants to be active but she sometimes seems to be in pain after playing. Thank you.
Vitamins are only useful if your girl’s diet is deficient and none are specifically helpful with pain after exercising. When it comes to herbal supplements, there are a few that are thought to be useful but the evidence isn’t always convincing. Turmeric is popular, but a review of studies into osteoarthritis found it actually made no real difference to dogs with sore joints. Similarly, glucosamine and chondroitin for the most part weren’t consistently effective.
One supplement that has some scientific backing is omega 3 fatty acids, which can be found in fish oil and green lipped mussel extract so a product containing those ingredients may be well worth trying. One thing that can really help is weight loss, if your girl is carrying a few extra pounds. If her pain worsens, then your vet will be able to offer advice but do let them know if you’re using any supplements so they can make sure there are no interactions between treatments. | 12.12.15 @ 06:31
