Can you teach an old dog new tricks? I've been thinking of adopting an older dog but worry about the potential behavior issues.
Yes! All dogs are capable of being trained at any time of life but rescue dogs and older ones can present some challenges.
A good kennels will fully assess their residents and should be able to give you a behavioural analysis of them. A dog from a rescue can present specific demands because of their earlier experiences but often they are simply normal, lovely dogs who have had bad luck with their owners. However, if you are prepared to commit to them and work with any issues they may have, at any age they can be wonderful, rewarding pets.
Some geriatric dogs will suffer with senile changes but these do tend to occur towards the latter stages of life. Often the changes are subtle and again, with good, consistent training, they can be over-come and there is some evidence to suggest that keeping the brain active in older age can delay or even reverse the damage.
Taking on any new adult dog will always present some unknows and these can potentially be more complex with a senior but as long as you are committed and prepared, you should gain yourself a true best friend! | 03.20.16 @ 21:52
