When it comes to aiding stranded walkers, rescuing lost hikers, and guiding forlorn climbers, dogs have a bit of a reputation for being guardian angels. Indeed, certain dog breeds are used to search for those missing in the remotest of places, but when was the last time that you came across a search and rescue cat? A Hungarian walker, who had become lost and injured in the Swiss Alps, credits a cat for his own safe descent – and his video of their journey is sweeping the internet.
Known by the name sc4s2cg, under which his popular Reddit thread was posted, the Hungarian claims that he was walking in the mountains near Gimmelwald, Switzerland, when he sprained his ankle and became disorientated. His intended route was blocked; what was he to do?
Luckily for him, a large black and white cat soon appeared, and seemed to beckon him to follow her: "[The cat] was just wandering around, [then] found me while I was resting from a hike,” he explained in the thread. “She was walking and kept looking at me to follow [and] led me straight to the path that would take me back down to the valley."
While the Reddit thread was created just three weeks ago, the feline rescue is believed to have taken place in 2013. The thread on Reddit has attracted numerous posts from walkers who know the area well. Indeed, others claim to have had meetings with the cat. While her name is unknown, it is believed that she belongs to a local couple that owns a hostel.
We think that the couple should be incredibly proud of their search and rescue cat. Her kindness during one walker's hour of need may well have saved his life.
