We seem to have an idiom for everything, and many of those expressions can be traced back to our relationships with our pets, or our recognition of their personalities and traits. "Dog-tired," "it's a dog's life," "his bark is worse than his bite," and "it's raining cats and dogs" are just a few famous sayings inspired by our love affair with our canine companions.
August 5th marks the celebration of yet another expression: International Work Like a Dog Day. While its origins are unknown, we'd like to think that this special day honors the many service dogs, guide dogs, herding dogs, and working dogs out there that always do their fair share. Whether they're rounding up livestock, assisting their pet parents with daily tasks, or conducting life or death missions, dogs are amazing – we could all aspire to be a little more like them.
How should you celebrate Work Like a Dog Day? If you'd like to honor the hard work and determination of your favorite four-legged pal, or give recognition to the dedication of colleagues, friends, and family members, try putting in a little extra effort today. Start work a little earlier, take a shorter lunch break, or ensure that you're the last one out of the office for a change – endeavor to do a good deed for at least one person. To work doggedly is to complete tasks with persistence and determination, so spend August 5th making sure that things get done. Your canine companion wouldn't simply walk away from that ball he's been chasing, so take the opportunity to succeed in an aspect of your life that you're usually less than thrilled by.
The great thing about working like a dog for the day is that you'll be able to laze like a dog once the day is over. Find a comfortable spot, stretch yourself out, and refrain from moving for as long as possible, you'll have earned that rest.
