If you have a dog or cat, you will know that nothing comes between your pet and the best medical care possible - not even the threat of a huge veterinary bill at the end of it. So, when their pet Pit Bull, Pearl, suddenly fell ill just six months after they had adopted her, Jen Marion and her fiancé Jim Raschella did not hesitate. They quickly got their beloved dog medical attention in order to discover what was wrong with her.
Some five trips to different veterinarians later, the couple finally had a diagnosis; Pearl had exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), which means her pancreas does not produce digestive enzymes properly. Unless Pearl received treatment she would continue to lose weight, but by this point Marion and Raschella had amassed a bill of more than $16,000, which they had saved for their honeymoon.
The couple did not think about not paying for the necessary treatment. "Our dogs are our babies," Marion explained. Raschella concurred: "As long as she was not in pain, and she was going to fight, we would fight for her."Luckily for the couple, they have friends and family that care about Pearl almost as much as they do, and the second graders that Marion teaches raised $120 through a lemonade stand. Marion and Raschella were no doubt heartened by the children’s efforts, but the story does not end there…
The children’s lemonade stand soon went viral, and renowned TV host, Ellen DeGeneres, came to hear of it. Marion and Raschella were asked to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in order to tell their story and came away with a little more than they bargained for. DeGeneres gave a lemonade stand to the children labeled '#fightlikeapearl', while the couple were given $10,000 towards Pearl’s medical expenses - and their honeymoon - by photo book printers Shutterfly, who sponsor the show.
Pearl is already showing signs of improvement, much to everyone's relief. We wish Pearl and her pet parents, all the best - here's hoping they enjoy that honeymoon!
