How do I know if I'm feeding my dog enough for the day? How do I know how much food he needs?

Your dog’s getting enough food if he has plenty of energy and his body is in good condition. You should be able to feel his ribs over his chest, and when you look at him from the side, he should have a tummy tuck just after his ribs. When you look at him from above, make sure he has a narrowing of his waist just after his ribs. If his ribs are too obvious and his waist very narrow then he is too lean; similarly if you can’t feel his ribs at all and he has no waist, then he’s overweight.

To work out how much to feed him, start with the guidelines on the packet of kibble you’ve chosen, and then give him more or less according to his condition. If he’s too lean, give him more and if a bit heavier than you’d like, cut back a little. If he’s quite overweight then it’s better to feed a prescription weight loss food than to significantly reduce the amount of his regular kibble he’s given, to avoid nutrient deficiencies.
