How do I train my dog to stay in our yard?
It can be challenge, keeping a determined dog in your yard but it is very important. A pet wandering the streets it as risk of being injured by traffic or being picked up by Animal Control.
Firstly, you need to ensure that the fencing is as secure as possible. Even the best dog in the world will escape if you make it easy! Also, make sure it is high enough, some dogs can jump a long way if they are determined.
Secondly, make the outside space an interesting place to be. Many dogs run away simply because the space they are in is boring and the outside world seems much more tempting! Make sure there are toys to play with and that you regularly introduce new ones and take away old ones (you don’t have to keep buying them, just rotate a few). Also, rather than feeding meals from a bowl, consider using a treat ball, which can keep dogs entertained for hours.
You can also consider specific boundary training techniques to help your dog to learn to stay within their territory. The most common of these involve using flags to define the edges of your property and rewarding your dog when he stays inside them.
Finally, you can consider electric fences or shock collars for particularly challenging dogs. However, these should only be used under expert guidance and tuition. | 03.25.16 @ 13:32
