How long should I expect my dog to be in pain after surgery?

My 11 year old dog had a fatty tumor removed from her chest and the vet went ahead and spayed her also. It has been 8 days and she is still not acting herself. She is crying a lot and acts as if she is in a lot of pain. Is this normal? The vet won't open until Monday so should I call the emergency line?

In my experience, dogs are usually feeling better and acting normally around 48 hours after that sort of routine surgery. I’d not expect them to be crying and looking like they’re in pain after 8 days. At that point it’s often hard to keep them quiet because they’re feeling very well and it’s nearly time for sutures to be removed.

It definitely sounds as if something isn’t quite right and your girl needs to be rechecked by a vet. If you have an emergency line available then I’d suggest you give them a call. They’ll be able to work out what’s going on and treat her appropriately, as well as prescribe pain relief if needed. They will set your mind at ease too.
