How much should a cat weigh? How do I know if my cat is a healthy weight?
There is quite a bit of variation in cat weights. They range from 7-8lbs for the domestic cat to as much as 20lbs for the bigger Maine Coone and Norwegian Forest cats.
When considering what a healthy weight for a cat is, it’s more useful to look at body condition score rather than the numbers on a scale. Body condition is scored from 1 to 9, with 1 being extremely underweight and 9 being obese. Healthy cats have a score of 4-5. You should be able to feel their ribs easily, there should be a noticeable narrowing of the tummy just after their ribs and no fat pat over their abdomen.
This is handy information to keep in mind because you can check that your puss is in good condition every time you cuddle them, and adjust the amount you feed them as needed. | 03.05.16 @ 13:44
