Life at sea can get lonely at times – unless you have a cat companion keeping you warm, that is. Meet Amelia, the seasoned sailor accompanying Captain Liz Clark on her round-the-world adventures. Since the day in 2013 when she first set paw on board Liz's boat, The Swell, Amelia has rarely left her captain's side, aside from the odd excursion on land. This dynamic duo has seen everything from the west coasts of Mexico and Central America to the South Pacific, though Amelia has a little catching up to do. Liz has sailed some 18,000 nautical miles since she first left home in Santa Barbara, California in 2005 in search of adventure.
Liz described the moment she and Amelia first met on her blog in February: "I'm not sure whether I found her or she found me that fateful afternoon in November of 2013, but it felt fairly clear that we were meant to be together. She was a skinny little adolescent then – about six months old and hungry for food and love. Something about her commanding lioness air and carefree bravado made me want to give her both."
Nicknamed "Tropicat", and named after erstwhile adventurer Amelia Earhart, this is one plucky cat in search of adventure, but she and Liz tend to spend a little more time on land than at sea nowadays. Following a particularly harrowing 42 days when Amelia went for a walk on an island and didn't show up, Liz now likes to give her the freedom to "climb trees and chase chickens."
