This story will warm your heart, as it did ours. On Friday August 5th, attracted by the frantic efforts of children standing on the shore at the Sicilian port of Marsala, members of the Italian Coast Guard noticed a tiny kitten floating lifeless in the sea before them. Rather than ignoring the plight of the bedraggled feline, one heroic officer dove into the water and brought the weakened kitten on board.
In the video released on YouTube, members of the Coast Guard can be seen performing CPR on the kitten, urging it to, "Breathe, breathe. Wake up!" Following a tense few moments of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and massaging from officers, the kitten expels a little water and is heard to meow faintly. The relief of those on board is palpable, and we'll admit that we were close to the edges of our seats too. While they may be more used to performing CPR on humans, this Coast Guard crew was undaunted when it came to helping the kitten, which is believed to have fallen into the water shortly before being rescued.
Once on dry land, the kitten was checked over by a veterinarian, and is said to be in good health despite his ordeal. Now named Charlie, the kitten has a home with the Coast Guard, though we're sure that he'll want to keep his feet firmly on dry land from now on. Charlie may have used up one of his nine lives that day, but our faith in humanity has been reinforced once again. Well done to all involved!
