When Happy Dog Barkery, Illinois, rescued Beagle Kale Chips last year, he was dangerously obese, weighing in at 86lbs. Unfortunately, his owner was suffering with severe memory loss, and would often overfeed Kale Chips without realizing. It was decided that it was in the pup's best interest that he be taken into care – and so his weight-loss journey began…
In the twelve months that Kale Chips has been living at Happy Dog Barkery, he has been on a strict diet, with staff members monitoring his every mouthful. The pooch's daily walking schedule has also been upped, and he has been enjoying regular swims.
Happy Dog Barkery owner Beth Staley said: "When he came to us he was morbidly obese. He was in a lot of pain and was such a grump because of it." Now, however, Kale Chips is half the dog he once was – quite literally. We are thrilled to report that Kale Chips has lost half his total body weight and now weighs a slim-line 44lbs.
"There's been such a change. He's reached his target and he's doing great. He's able to enjoy life now," explained Beth. What does Kale Chips get up to now that he has the freedom of pain-free joints? "He loves to run and swim and chase squirrels. All things he couldn't do before."
Understandably, Happy Dog Barkery has been rather particular about finding a new home for Kale Chips, as he has been through such a lot. However, in the last two days, their Facebook page joyfully announced that he would be staying with his foster family, which has had him since he was rescued: "He will get to hang with his foster siblings and stay with the family he has grown to love so much. We couldn't be happier."
A happy ending – well done, Kale Chips, and enjoy your new home.
