My cat seems to like to yowl in the hallway where it can echo, usually late at night. What can we do to discourage that?

Hi Zanna, you don't mention how old your cat is, but this behavior can be more common in feline senior citizens. There are a number of possible reasons for it, it can be due to an underlying medical condition such as hyperthyroidism (there’s more information on that here - http://www.lovepets.com/feline-hyperthyroidism-101) or high blood pressure or even pain. This means a visit to your vet is in order. Some older cats become anxious as their sight and hearing fades, so a night light or radio could help. If medical causes have been ruled out by a thorough physical exam by your vet, then the night howling may be related to dementia. If that’s the case, then the pheromone Feliway might be useful to make them feel more relaxed or your vet can prescribe other medications to help manage symptoms of dementia. | 11.04.15 @ 05:01
