My Chihuahua constantly licks his paws, I mean constantly. Any reason behind this, should I be worried?
He literally leaves a huge wet spot wherever he was sitting while licking.
Hi Monique, this is a common concern of dog owners – many pooches do exactly the same thing as your pup. Dogs can lick their feet when they come in from outside, to remove dew or dust but you’d be more likely to notice this behavior only after a visit outside and it sounds like it’s a lot more frequent than that.
One thing to consider is that constant and chronic foot licking can be associated with allergies and also with fungal infections. Both food allergy and atopic dermatitis can present like this, and there may be other symptoms such as itchy ears, runny eyes or rubbing the muzzle on the ground. Some dogs are itchy on the chest and belly too. When the skin becomes inflamed then it’s possible to get a secondary fungal infection between the foot pads and this can also itch and be a bit smelly.
If it does turn out that your pup has allergies then there are ways of managing them and your vet can help with advice on appropriate medications and even food trials or allergy testing if indicated.
