It’s really important that you prevent your dog from licking and biting at their incision even though it’s irritating them. Is there any chance they’re still in a bit of pain? It would be worth asking your vet whether pain relief for a little longer may help. Otherwise, one method of stopping your dog annoying the wound is to use an Elizabethan collar or a cone, to make it physically impossible for them to reach it. It’s cumbersome for them and a bit inconvenient for you but it does the job. Depending on where the incision is and the type of surgery, a dressing or bandage can help too.

Some people put a bitter tasting product on the skin beside the incision. There are products specifically designed for this but there’s no guarantee that they’ll work. Some dogs seem to like them and will lick even more. If the irritation is because of the sutures and not because of pain, then try some of these options. The sutures are only in place for a short period of time and most dogs are less itchy when they’re removed.
