Little Mac N' Cheez, or Mac for short, didn't appear to have much going for him when he was found cowering on the streets of Long Island, New York. Abandoned by his mom and paralyzed from the waist down, tiny Mac was a rather sorry sight as the veterinarians at Massapequa Pet Vet received him in – you've guessed it – a Mac N' Cheez box. While some may have eyed the kitten's disability with pity and put him to sleep, the technicians at this plucky surgery decided instead to give the little guy a chance, fashioning him a wheelchair out of Lego blocks, K'Nex pieces, and other toy odds and ends.
Massapequa Pet Vet Medical Director Dr. Ned Horowitz, said: "There were about 12 of us watching him. We put him on the ground, and he just took off". The vets there believe that Mac's paralysis is due to nerve damage, and it's uncertain what the future holds for the function in his legs. "He's starting to slowly regain some use of his legs," Dr. Horowitz explained. "We took X-rays, and he's on medication to hopefully help him. He's eating well, he's very playful, he's affectionate." Life without the use of his hind legs isn't holding little Mac back, it would seem.
Currently in the foster care of a hospital technician, it is hoped that Mac N' Cheez will be able to go up for adoption once he's strong enough. You would never believe that little Mac has only had a week or so to adapt to his new wheels – he's super confident, and speedy to boot.
We wish you all the best, Mac – we hope you find a wonderful new home soon.
