At the beginning of last week, we brought you news of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest, an annual event held in Petaluma as part of the Sonoma-Marin Fair. Today, we're able to announce that the winner was SweePee Rambo, a 17-year-old blind Chihuahua-Chinese Crested cross; we assure you, though, this pup's inner beauty shines through.
Aiming to show the world how every dog is gorgeous in their own special way, regardless of outward appearances, the World's Ugliest Dog Contest has been running for 28 years. That's a lot of dogs! This year's contest featured a "Fashion Faux Paws Fashion Show" and a "Beauty and the Beast Walk", in which Miss Sonoma County walked alongside some of the dogs available for adoption in local rescue homes.
What of this year's winner, SweePee Rambo? Bought as a gift for pet parent Jason Wurtz's wife some seventeen years ago, SweePee is blind in both eyes, wears Doggie Depends diapers, and has a blonde Mohawk that flops over to one side. Wurtz, from Encino, California, assumed custody of the pup during divorce proceedings as his ex-wife had yet to be won over by SweePee's charms. This isn't the first time that the duo has entered the contest; this year was SweePee's third entry, though her first win.
As well as a trophy and the coveted title of World's Ugliest Dog, SweePee and Jason Wurtz have bagged a prize of $1,500. More than that, though, each of the dogs and pet parents that entered has played a part in honoring hounds of every kind – regardless of how they look. Isn't that the point of the contest?
We hope SweePee and her pet parent enjoy spending their prize – we can see a whole lot of doggie treats in their future!
