We've all heard the story of the ugly duckling that transformed into a swan, but have you ever heard the tale of the mangy mutt who turned into an adorable, lovable pup?
Meet Augustus: a one-time scrappy stray that suffered from mange, worms, ear infections, and hunger. As Augustus wandered the streets in Northwest Alabama, people used to throw things at him to keep him off their property. Augustus was hungry, afraid, and weak — and it's easy to imagine that he thought he'd never find a home.
Life changed, however, when the workers at Heart of Alabama: Save, Rescue, Adopt (HASRA) picked him up. Augustus's mange was so bad that his rescuers initially couldn't even tell what breed of dog he was. It quickly became clear that Augustus had lived a life full of pain, neglect, and sadness.
Augustus – Auggie, for short – was hospitalized for weeks. He was given an intense course of antibiotics and daily gel treatments aimed at peeling off the scaly layers of mange that had formed on his coat and skin. Over time, the scales began to come off and Auggie was suddenly covered in raw, exposed, underdeveloped skin.
As Auggie stabilized, he was transferred to the HASRA treatment sanctuary where he underwent daily oil treatments to rejuvenate his skin and help him heal. He had daily baths and was fed well in order to help him gain weight and become healthy. The staff at the shelter would rub his skin with coconut oil while Auggie snuggled with his caretakers, exhibiting his loving and sweet nature.
In order to raise funds for Auggie's treatment and spread the news about his story, the loving and patient staff at the HASRA shelter started up a Facebook page for Auggie, and in no time at all, people around the world fell in love with the mangy little mutt. Quickly, Auggie gained a huge amount of followers who tracked his progress, donated money to the cause, and shared his story.
Over time, Auggie's skin began to rehabilitate and his rescuers began to learn that he was, in fact, a handsome Border-Collie mix. Although it took months for Auggie to rehab entirely, his beautiful white and black coat eventually came through. His fans were astounded, as were his caretakers, at the transformation of this sweet little dog.
After he was given a clean bill of health, Auggie was adopted by a woman named Jordan who loves the dog and considers him her living miracle.
Auggie's story just goes to show that even the mangiest little strays deserve love. Even after a case of extreme abuse and neglect, Auggie has turned into a sweet, loving, dedicated family pet that inspires everyone with his story of transformation and healing. Thanks to a few dedicated individuals and a huge load of kindness, Auggie's transformation became a true rags-to-riches tale for everyone to admire.
