What dog food helps with weight loss and joint pain relief?

Greetings! My son has a 7 year old dachshund who is overweight and has joint pain (he moans when picked up). I have found dog food for weight loss and one for joint support but is there a non-prescription dog food that would provide both? Thanks!

Hi Brenda, great question...

Has he been diagnosed with arthritis by your veterinarian?

There are a few products on the market that aim to provide additional glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate supplementation (e.g Pedigree Healthy Joints) but the only one claiming controlled calorie content and joint supplementation (that springs to my mind) is Hills j/d® Canine Mobility.

I cannot recommend either as I have never used them I'm afraid. Supplements can be purchased separately and added to food used to help weight loss if needed.

Hope that helps a little, worth chatting with your veterinarian on this one as weight loss should be managed with regular weigh ins and calorie restriction should be done gradually. We would also want to rule out anything else causing the "moan" too.
