Steffanie, it’s great that you’re thinking of this because excess weight is a risk factor for a few undesirable health issues in cats such as diabetes. The two aspects to weight loss are to reduce calories in by controlling your cat’s diet and to increase calories used up by adding some exercise to their daily routine.

Prescription weight loss diets are ideal for losing pounds because they are lower in calories without short changing your cat on vitamins and minerals, which can happen if you just reduce the amount of their regular food.

When it comes to increasing exercise, it’s a whole lot harder with cats. However, some ideas are to feed them in a food dispensing toy so they have to work for their meal or use kibble to play chase – toss the pieces of kibble one at a time so your cat has to trot a little way to eat it. Some cats like to chase a feather toy or a laser pointer and this too can use up a few calories. It’s not a fast process but well worth sticking with for the long term health benefits. | 01.07.16 @ 11:02
