They say that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but you can actually tell a lot about a cat just by looking at it. While every cat breed is unique in terms of appearance, certain facial features are often correlated to specific personality traits. Here’s your chance to learn what your cat’s face can tell you about the feline.
Face Shapes and Body Shapes
You might agree with the statement “a cat is a cat”, but if you put two different breeds side by side, you will notice some distinct differences. Not only do different cat breeds differ in size, but they also exhibit different physical characteristics such as body shape, fur length, and coat color. Different cat breeds also have different face shapes. Below you will find a list of the three most common face shapes for felines as well as examples of breeds:
- Round –
The circular face silhouette in cats usually correlates with a ball-shaped head, a flat profile, and large eyes. These cats may also have a more rounded body. Examples of cat breeds with round faces include the Persian and the Himalayan. - Square -
Cats with square faces are usually big and solid in body with an overall box-like shape. Examples of cats with square faces include the Maine Coon and the Norwegian Forest Cat. - Triangular –
The triangular face shape in cats usually comes with a long, lanky body as well as large ears. Cats with these three-sided faces often have narrow noses. The Siamese, Burmese, and Abyssinian breeds are some great examples of geometric-faced kitties.
Face Shape and Pussy Personalities
Now that you know how to identify different breeds of cat based on their face shape, you may be wondering what your cat’s face tells you about his personality. Though every furry friend is unique, certain personality traits have been linked to certain face shapes. Below you will find a brief overview of the personality traits most commonly linked to particular feline facial characteristics:
- Round –Breeds with round faces tend to be quiet and shy. These cats are gentle and loving, appreciating a good cuddle or a nap on your lap. Once you develop a bond with a pet like that, they will rarely leave your side.
- Square –Cats with square faces tend to be independent and confident in nature. These free spirits are also pretty mellow – they can get along with children, dogs and other cats without being particularly bothered by anything.
- Triangular –Wedge-faced pussycats tend to be very active and energetic. You might be able to teach livewires like this to perform tricks, but be aware they do not tend to be lap cats – they are happier running around outside or watching birds from the window.
Different breeds of cat not only look different, but they exhibit different personality traits as well. By looking at your cat and judging his face shape, you may be able to tell a little bit about his personality. Every cat is unique, however; make sure you get to know your furry companion as an individual. Just like people, you shouldn’t generalize about cats.
