Xylitol is a sugar substitute. It’s as sweet as sugar but has about 1/3 fewer calories so it’s included in foods designed for weight loss. Some people choose products containing xylitol just because they want to cut down on the amount of sugar they’re eating.

You’re likely to find xylitol in sugar free gum, candies, jams and baked goods. More recently, peanut butters have been under the spotlight and many have been found to contain xylitol. While safe for people, xylitol causes low blood glucose levels and liver disease in dogs and this can be fatal. Because it is so dangerous to dogs you must check the labels of any human food you want to share with your pooch and make sure xylitol isn’t listed in the ingredients. It’s also known as birch sugar so keep an eye out for that name too. | 03.04.16 @ 02:07
